Back glass replacement

Broken rear window? We can help.

A shattered rear windshield leaves quite a mess. Broken glass can end up all over your trunk, cargo area and back seats, and even inside the interior trim.

Whether your rear window was hit by a flying rock, vandalism, an accident or a falling object, Blue Chip Auto Glass can get it replaced. We replace back glass on cars, trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles, from sedan rear windshields to SUV liftgate glass and sliding rear truck windows.

Rear window replacement is more than setting a new piece of glass. Many back windows have built-in defrosters, antennas and other electrical parts that have to be handled properly during installation. From our Phoenix shop and Mesa shop, we replace back glass across the Valley.

Know your glass

Why does back glass shatter instead of crack?

If your rear windshield has ever broken, you may have noticed it behaves differently from the front. Most front windshields are laminated glass, while many rear windows are tempered glass.

Tempered glass is heat-treated to make it stronger. When it breaks, it shatters into hundreds of small fragments instead of forming a single crack, which is why a broken rear windshield can leave a big opening in the back of your vehicle.

Some newer vehicles use laminated rear glass instead, so how the glass breaks depends on the manufacturer and model. Either way, significant rear window damage generally means replacement.

Tempered vs. laminated back glass

Not every rear windshield is made from the same glass, which is why some completely shatter while others stay mostly intact after damage.

The type that shatters

Tempered back glass

Tempered glass is common in rear windshields. When it's hit hard enough, it breaks into many small fragments that can scatter across the rear seats, trunk or cargo area.

Tempered glass generally can't be repaired once it's broken, so it has to be replaced.

The type that cracks

Laminated back glass

Laminated glass is layers of glass bonded together with a plastic interlayer. When it's damaged, it usually cracks while staying mostly intact.

Some laminated glass damage can be repaired, but rear window repair isn't always appropriate or supported by the manufacturer. Our technicians can tell you the right replacement options for your vehicle.

More than glass

Back glass replacement involves more than the glass

Rear windows often have features you don't notice until the glass breaks: electrical connections, heating elements, antennas or mounting points for other parts. All of them matter when we identify and install the correct replacement glass.

  • Rear window defrosters

Those thin horizontal lines are heating elements that clear fog and frost. On many vehicles they're built into the glass, so the new glass needs the right defroster connections, and we reconnect them during installation.

  • Rear windshield wipers

Many SUVs and hatchbacks have a rear wiper mounted through or near the glass. Depending on the vehicle, we remove or reposition it during replacement and reassemble it afterward.

  • Antennas & electrical connections

Some vehicles build radio antennas or other electrical features into the rear glass. You may not see them from inside, but they matter when choosing the right part to match your vehicle's original equipment.

Every kind of rear glass

Back glass replacement for cars, trucks & SUVs

Not every rear window is installed the same way. Your vehicle's design determines how the glass is mounted, which parts come off and which replacement parts are needed.

  • Sedan rear windshields

Most sedans have a fixed rear windshield bonded directly into the body. We remove the damaged glass, prepare the mounting surface and install the new rear windshield with the right automotive adhesive system.

  • SUV & hatchback rear glass

Many SUVs and hatchbacks have the rear window in a liftgate or hatch, often with defroster connections, a rear wiper and antennas. Some have glass that opens separately from the liftgate. The installation depends on the vehicle's design.

  • Pickup truck rear windows

Some trucks use a single fixed panel; others have sliding rear windows with several glass sections. Depending on the design and parts available, a damaged sliding rear window may mean replacing the whole assembly. We'll help identify the right glass for your truck.

Our process

How we replace your rear windshield

The exact procedure varies by vehicle, but most back glass replacements follow the same steps.

  1. 1

    Inspect the damage

We identify the correct replacement glass, inspect the surrounding area and review your rear window's features, including defrosters and wipers.

  2. 2

    Remove broken glass

We carefully remove the broken glass we can reach from the window opening and the affected interior areas, plus any trim or parts that need to come off.

  3. 3

    Prepare the installation area

We clean and prepare the mounting surfaces to the requirements of the vehicle and adhesive system.

  4. 4

    Install the replacement glass

The new rear window goes in with the right mounting method, materials and procedures.

  5. 5

    Reconnect components

Where applicable, we reconnect the rear defroster, wiper assembly and other parts tied to the glass.

  6. 6

    Final inspection

We inspect the finished installation and go over any precautions with you, including adhesive curing and safe drive-away time when they apply.

Rear window shattered?

What should you do if your rear window shatters?

A shattered rear windshield leaves your vehicle open to weather, dust and debris. A few precautions help:

  1. 1

    Avoid touching loose glass

Small fragments can stay attached to the window frame or trim.

  2. 2

Keep passengers away from the area

Broken glass may be spread across the rear seats or cargo area.

  3. 3

    Protect the interior from weather

If you can, park in a covered spot until it's replaced.

  4. 4

Don't use the rear defroster or wiper

Running them with damaged glass can cause more problems.

  5. 5

    Call Blue Chip Auto Glass

We'll identify the correct replacement glass and go over your service options.

If the vehicle can't be driven safely because of the damage, tell us before trying to move it.

Do you offer mobile back glass replacement?

Mobile back glass replacement may be available for certain vehicles (covered parking required). Some rear windshield replacements are better done in the shop, such as when there's a lot of broken glass to clean up, the vehicle has specialized rear glass parts, or the job needs extra disassembly.

We'll review your vehicle and tell you whether mobile service makes sense. We have a Phoenix shop and a Mesa shop and serve the whole greater Phoenix area.
