How we do it
Small damage deserves professional attention.
A small windshield chip can quickly turn into a much larger problem. Temperature changes, road vibrations, and everyday driving can cause existing damage to spread.
At Blue Chip Auto Glass, we use professional repair systems from Delta Kits and GlasWeld to help stabilize damaged windshields and improve their appearance.
When you bring your vehicle to our shop, our technicians follow a careful process designed to give your windshield the best possible repair.
Here's how it works.

Identify your damage
What kind of chip do you have?
Most rock chips fall into one of these types. If a U.S. quarter covers all of it, it can usually be repaired.
RepairableBullseye
A round, dark circle where the outer layer of glass broke away. Usually repairable.
RepairableStar break
Small cracks spreading out from the impact point. Repairable when a quarter covers all of it.
RepairableCombination break
A bullseye with cracks coming off it. Usually repairable if it's smaller than a quarter.
RepairableHalf-moon
A partial bullseye, shaped like a half circle. Usually repairable.
MaybeShort crack
We generally repair chips no larger than a quarter, so most cracks need a new windshield. Send us a photo and we'll take a look.
Needs replacementLong crack
A crack longer than a dollar bill has usually spread too far to repair. Time for a new windshield.

Phase 1
Inspection & Preparation
- 1
Step 1
Inspecting the Windshield Damage
Before beginning a repair, our technicians evaluate the damage to determine whether it can be safely repaired.
We generally repair chips no larger than the size of a quarter.
During our inspection, we evaluate:
- The size and type of damage.
- The location of the chip.
- Whether cracks extend beyond the impact point.
- The presence of moisture or contamination.
- Whether the damage interferes with the driver's visibility.
Not every chip is repairable. If the damage is too large, improperly located, or otherwise unsuitable for repair, we'll explain why windshield replacement may be necessary.
Before beginning the repair, we also explain that existing windshield damage can occasionally spread during the repair process. Although our technicians take precautions to minimize this risk, damaged glass can react unpredictably to the pressure and techniques involved.
We believe customers should understand this possibility before authorizing the repair.
Why it matters
A thorough inspection and clear expectations help customers make informed decisions about their windshield.

- 2
Step 2
Cleaning & Preparing the Damage
Once we've determined that the chip is repairable, we carefully clean and prepare the damaged area.
Our technicians remove loose glass fragments, dirt, and other debris from the impact point.
Sometimes it is necessary to reschedule a repair appointment when excessive moisture is present.
Why it matters
Moisture can dilute the repair resin, effectively reducing or stopping its ability to bond the damaged area.
- 3
Step 3
Drilling & Opening the Impact Point
Our technicians use specialized tools to prepare the damaged area for proper resin penetration.
We carefully drill the impact point to create an opening that allows repair resin to enter the damaged glass.
In certain situations, we may also perform a controlled technique commonly called "popping the chip."
This involves carefully opening the impact point slightly further to create additional space for resin to flow into the damaged area.
Our technicians determine when this technique is appropriate based on the type and condition of the damage.
Why it matters
Proper preparation helps repair resin reach areas that might otherwise remain filled with trapped air.
Phase 2
Resin Injection & Repair
- 4
Step 4
Positioning Our Professional Repair Equipment
We use professional windshield repair systems from Delta Kits and GlasWeld, two established manufacturers of automotive glass repair equipment.
Our technicians position a specialized repair bridge and injector directly over the damaged area.
The equipment creates a controlled connection with the impact point, allowing resin to be introduced into the damaged glass.
Why it matters
Professional repair equipment helps our technicians control resin application and achieve consistent results.

- 5
Step 5
Removing Air & Injecting Repair Resin
Using our specialized repair equipment, we introduce professional windshield repair resin into the damaged area.
Through controlled vacuum and pressure, we work to remove trapped air and encourage resin to penetrate the chip and its surrounding fractures.
Depending on the damage, our technicians may repeat this process to improve resin penetration.
Why it matters
Proper resin penetration helps stabilize the existing damage and reduces the likelihood of further cracking.
- 6
Step 6
Curing the Repair Resin
Once the damaged area has been filled, we use ultraviolet (UV) light to cure the repair resin.
The UV light hardens the resin, helping bond the damaged portions of the windshield together.
Why it matters
Proper curing helps stabilize the existing damage and restore some of the glass's strength.
Phase 3
Finishing & Final Inspection
- 7
Step 7
Sealing & Finishing the Repair
After the injected resin has cured, we apply a specialized pit filler to seal the surface impact point.
The filler is cured using UV light, and any excess material is carefully removed.
We then finish the surface to create a smooth, clean repair.
Why it matters
Proper finishing helps seal the damaged area against moisture and contamination while improving its appearance.
- 8
Step 8
Final Inspection
Cosmetic improvement is a bonus, not a guarantee
Before completing the service, our technicians inspect the repaired area to evaluate resin penetration, surface finish, and overall appearance.
Sometimes, the cosmetic results are remarkable. We've completed repairs where the original damage becomes almost impossible to see.
Other times, some evidence of the chip remains visible even after a successful repair.
While we love achieving a nearly invisible repair, appearance isn't our primary objective.
The most important purpose of windshield chip repair is to stabilize the damaged glass and reduce the likelihood of the crack spreading.
Cosmetic improvement is an added benefit, not a guaranteed result.

What to expect
What a chip repair does, honestly
Stabilizes the damage
The main goal: resin fills the break and bonds the glass, helping stop the chip from spreading and restoring some of its strength.
Saves you money
No expensive windshield, labor or recalibration cost.
Looks better, usually
Sometimes the chip almost disappears. Other times a small mark remains. Cosmetic improvement is a bonus, not a guarantee.
A small risk, explained up front
A chip is already weakened glass, and it can occasionally spread during the repair. We take precautions and explain this before we start.
Before your repair
Do this now so it doesn't spread
Arizona is hard on chipped windshields. Big temperature swings and hot glass turn chips into cracks fast.
- 1
Cover it with clear tape
Keeps dirt and water out of the break, which helps the repair come out clearer.
- 2
Park in the shade
Arizona sun heats the glass fast, and heat is what makes a chip crack and spread.
- 3
Go easy on the AC and defrost
Don't blast hot or cold air straight at the windshield. Sudden temperature changes spread chips.
- 4
Skip the car wash
High-pressure water and soap can push into the break and make it spread.
- 5
Don't slam the doors
The shock travels through the glass and can turn a chip into a crack.
- 6
Get it fixed in a few days
The sooner we repair it, the better it looks and the less likely it spreads.
Can a windshield chip spread during repair?
Yes. A windshield chip is already a weakened area of glass, and there is always a possibility that the damage could spread during the repair process. Techniques such as drilling, controlled pressure, and opening the impact point can occasionally cause existing cracks to expand. We explain this risk to our customers before beginning any repair. Our technicians take precautions to minimize the possibility, but even with proper equipment and techniques, damaged glass can sometimes crack further.
Will the chip disappear completely?
Every chip is different. Sometimes our technicians achieve results that almost look like magic: the damage becomes virtually invisible. Other times, a small mark or outline of the original damage remains. Although we always strive for the best cosmetic result possible, the primary purpose of windshield chip repair is to stabilize the damage and help prevent it from spreading.
How large of a chip can you repair?
At Blue Chip Auto Glass, we generally repair windshield chips no larger than the size of a quarter, provided the damage meets our other repairability criteria.
The Blue Chip Difference
Repair when possible. Replace when necessary.
At Blue Chip Auto Glass, we believe in providing honest recommendations, realistic expectations, and professional workmanship.
Our technicians carefully evaluate every chip, use specialized Delta Kits and GlasWeld repair equipment, and take the time to properly prepare the damage before injecting resin.
Sometimes the results are nearly invisible. Other times, the original impact remains noticeable.
Either way, our priority is the same: stabilizing the damage to help prevent a small chip from becoming a larger crack.
Our goal is always to provide a quality repair while helping you avoid an unnecessary windshield replacement whenever possible.
Because even the smallest repairs deserve attention to detail.
